Spotlight: the Avro Vulcan

XH558 is the last airworthy example of the Avro Vulcan bomber. This behemoth was restored to working order through the efforts of the British public, and now, she's in trouble again. The recession has hit charitable projects hard, and the "Vulcan to the Sky" Trust is up against the wall.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary for the Vulcan, but there's a very real possibility that XH558 won't be flying this year. On February 1st, the Trust's employees were all given a month's notice, in the event that they cannot reach their target figure.

My grandfather was employed by Vickers and Handley Page in his youth, and was part of the design team that produced the Vulcan. He may also be the only man who ever managed to fall off the wing of one, a story which still makes me laugh (if you've ever seen the size of a Vulcan, you'll know why). I've developed a bit of an attachment to the aircraft as a result, and I'd hate to see her grounded for her birthday.

Throughout 2010, sales of any images of the Vulcan will include a contribution towards the "Vulcan to the Sky" appeal.
